BACKGROUND

Situated north of Niagara Falls with a population of 8,000, the Lewiston area is largely residential with a small business district in the center. The Lewiston Fire Company (LFC) responds to about 1,200 calls per year, with 15-20% of those calls being fire related. Nationally, departments are struggling to recruit young firefighters and Lewiston is no exception. LFC has 55 seasoned firefighters on the roster and a well-equipped fleet with 3 pump fire trucks and 2 ambulances.

CHALLENGE

In historic Lewiston and many other older urban areas, low pressure or low flow hydrants can cause complications on the fire ground along with putting the trucks pump at risk from loss of water supply. Irregular or low-pressure hydrants can also impact public utility municipal water systems already stressed by population and climate shifts. With the high horsepower and high-capacity pumps that are standard in fire trucks, it puts water flow at odds with aging water supply systems.

SOLUTION

In 2017 when the LFC was in the process of building an engine, they were immediately intrigued by the way this machine could free the human mind. After Lewiston’s leadership team received a SAM demo, the system’s expertise managing pumping from low pressure hydrants impressed everyone. Chiefs Les Myers (Ret.) and Brian Christman (Ret.) knew they needed SAM on their crew right away. SAM prevents catastrophic error by automating routine pumping tasks. When SAM controls the flow, there is no negative pressure – and water is always available to firefighters approaching the flames. More importantly, the pump operator is freed from focusing on the pump panel on the truck and instead communicates changing conditions to the crew. The SAM System made low pressure hydrant pumping simpler, faster, and safer for the Lewiston Fire Company.

Lewiston’s historic infrastructure and small community size were well-served by their fire service leadership who were eager to embrace a Future Forward mindset.
