BACKGROUND

The SAM System is part of the next generation of machines that free the human mind and body, so it is a perfect fit for ever-evolving busy cosmopolitan area like Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Situated just north of the city center, the Central York Fire Department (CYFD) services the towns of Newmarket and Aurora. With a combined population of about 150,000 people, the CYFD has 5 stations and covers about 15 square miles or 39 square kilometers. The department is relatively large with 160 paid staff members, made up of both full and part time staff. As a unionized department, the team receives upwards of 5,500 calls per year, 20% of which are fire related.

CHALLENGE

Thinking Future Forward is a consistent mindset instead of a single problem to solve. As a department, Central York embraces technology changes within the fire industry. They were the first to adopt personalized thermal image cameras in Canada. The CYFD wasn’t necessarily trying to solve issues with their new engine but wanted to look at the benefits of new technology as they were replacing an aging rig. “The SAM system allows you to secure a water supply much faster and easier than a traditional truck,” said CYFD Captain Andrew Burdette.

“The SAM system allows you to secure a water supply much faster and easier than a traditional truck.”

SOLUTION

A Future Forward mindset plus a SAM System helped streamline fireground operations from start to finish, attacking the single greatest problem on every emergency scene: time. When Captain Burdette learned the intricacies of SAM, he was impressed that “…something that would take you four steps to perform, with SAM, you perform in one step.” Further, Captain Burdette noted that SAM increases safety for firefighters as it allows members to focus on other, more life-threatening issues on the fireground.

RESULTS

Because SAM can give warnings for low tank water levels, low water pressure, and more, Captain Burdette noted how that has increased safety for their department. If a firefighter is focusing on changing conditions on the fireground and crew communication, SAM will alert them to low water level or pressure. After several years of using the system, Captain Burdette has only positive things to say about it: “SAM provides more safety, improves efficiency, and I personally like it as a system.”

“Just get out and use a SAM truck.”
